Joe Mallen joined Helios Quantitative, LLC, in 2016, taking on the responsibilities of quantitative research and managing client relationships. He currently holds the position of Chief Investment Officer (CIO). Mallen is steadfast in his belief that the future of the investment advisor industry begins with cost effective and risk-managed solutions for clients. Like Shuba, he hopes to enable financial advisors to be competitive by providing them with institutional level market research.
Mallen holds a masters in finance with a concentration in quantitative finance from London Business School and a BSB in finance from the Carlson School of Management at the University of Minnesota.
When the financial crisis of 2008 struck, it became obvious that a quantitative, emotionless approach to asset management was the clearest path to success in the modern market. After spending time at Ameriprise Financial and as Senior Quant Analyst at Columbia Threadneedle, Chris Shuba focused on developing mathematical models that could help financial advisors mitigate the volatility of the market.
In 2014, Shuba joined Westlake, Grahl & Glover as Chief Investment Officer, where he put to use a series of algorithms he designed. These models were met with immediate interest by a broad range of clients, and within the year, financial advisors nationwide were clamoring for access to his algorithms.
Soon thereafter, he founded Helios Quantitative, LLC. Shuba is the Chief Executive Officer (CEO), and Chief Compliance Officer (COO) at Helios. Today, Helios influences the assets of advisors that collectively manage over $9 billion.
In 2015, Shuba was named the greater Sacramento Area’s “Face of Investing” by Sacramento Magazine. He is a regular speaker and contributor at industry events hosted by the likes of State Street, JP Morgan, and more.
Shuba holds a BS in business finance and law from the Opus School of Business at the University of St. Thomas, and holds a FINRA Series 7, and has completed the Level 1 CFA.

Laurence Schiffman, CFP®, CLU®
Financial Guide and Founder of Traverse Planning
Over the 13 years that Laurence Schiffman, CFP®, CLU® spent at a large firm, he continued to feel the pressure to focus on products over planning and the limitations of what he was, and wasn’t, allowed to advise clients on. After a great deal of soul searching and due diligence, Laurence felt that the only way to eliminate those conflicts of interest and truly put his clients first was to transition to the independent space. In 2019, Laurence launched Traverse Planning, an independent advisory firm based out of Colorado.
Knowing that finances are a very intimate and intimidating topic, Laurence and his team focus on making the planning experience as stress-free as possible. Laurence’s knowledge, accountability, and transparency has helped him to develop trust and lasting relationships with his clients.
Laurence specializes in working with clients that are retired, within 10 years of retirement, and those that are very tax-sensitive (business owners, individuals with equity compensation packages, etc.). Laurence combines his financial planning skills with his background in accounting to optimize the tax-efficiency of client planning. He believes that good tax planning carries a rate of return in of itself. Unlike the market, one doesn’t need to take additional risks to achieve those additional returns.
In 2019, Laurence was honored as the Runner-Up in the PlanPlus Global Financial Planning Competition for the North American Regional.
Laurence is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER, holds a Chartered Life Underwriter designation, and earned his Bachelor of Science in Accountancy from the WP Carey School of Business at Arizona State University.
Laurence was born and raised in NJ but now lives in Arvada, CO with his wife Stephanie, son Hunter, and their dog Dolce. He is an avid skier, having competed in Ski-Cross at both the amateur and semi-professional levels. When he’s not skiing or in the office, you can find Laurence and his family out camping or traveling.
